Uveitis
UveitisUveitis is the name given to inflammation of the "uveal tract" of the eyeball. This inflammation can be caused by systemic disease (such as Sarcoidosis), infectious disease (such as Tuberculosis), or autoimmune diseases (such as Multiple Sclerosis). Often times, we do not know the cause of uveitis. We diagnose uveitis by performing an eye exam. Sometimes a fluorescein angiogram is done to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment consists of treating the cause of the uveitis. Steroids are often used as the first-line of treatment. These can be administered either topically (eyedrops), orally (pills), behind the eyeball (sub-tenon's injection), or into the eyeball (intravitreal injection). As with all treatments - the risks, benefits, and alternatives must always be considered. Our doctors are experts in the diagnosis and management of uveitis. We are currently involved in research projects to develop new diagnostic modalities and treatments for uveitis.
