Strokes of the Retina
Vein Occlusion
Artery Occlusion Sometimes, the blood supply to the retina gets obstructed. This "stroke" is called a Retinal Artery Occlusion. Sometimes the blood drainage system of the eye gets obstructed. This type of stroke is called a Retinal Vein Occlusion. Both of these occlusions can damage the retina and cause both distortion and blurriness of vision. A fluorescein angiogram is often used to confirm the diagnosis in these cases. Treatment is limited for both these diseases. Sometimes, we can utilize laser therapy or steroids to help stabilize vision in cases of vein occlusions. As with all procedures - the risks, benefits, and alternatives must always be considered.
