CMV Retinitis

CMV RetinitisCMV Retinitis

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Retinitis is a potentially devastating eye disease which can cause total blindness if not treated. CMV is a viral disease of the retina most often seen in either HIV+ patients or patients that have undergone organ transplantation. This CMV virus quickly eats away at the retina. The symptoms are flashes of light, floaters, and blurred vision. This virus can also lead to a retinal detachment. Treatment consists of anti-viral medications. These can be administered orally, by IV, or injected straight into the affected eyeball. Treatment is often done in conjunction with an infectious disease specialist. As with all treatments, the risks, benefits, and alternatives must always be considered.
