Central Serous Retinopathy

Central Serous Retinopathy Central Serous Retinopathy

Sometimes, a blister will form under the retina. This is called Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR). If this blister occurs under the macula (the center-part of the retina that provides the best vision needed for reading and fine detail), blurred vision and distortion of the vision can result. CSR commonly occurs in healthy young males between 30 and 50 years of age. Steroid use and stress can also contribute to CSR. We will often perform a fluorescein angiogram to confirm the diagnosis of CSR. We do not usually treat CSR unless the vision is significantly affected over many months. When that happens, we may offer the patient a laser treatment to try to shrink the blister. As with all procedures - the risks, benefits, and alternatives must always be considered.
