Ahmed Abdelsalam, MD, FACS
Dr. Abdelsalam specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the vitreous and retina. His expertise includes treating macular degeneration, advanced diabetic retinopathy, trauma, traumatic retinal detachments, complex and recurrent retinal detachments, giant retinal tears, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and pediatric vitreoretinal surgery.
Dr. Abdelsalam is board certified by both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a frequent presenter at many professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American College of Surgeons.
He completed his Internal Medicine training at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and his residency in Ophthalmology at the New Jersey Medical School. He completed his fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Michigan. He has been a full-time faculty member of the Pritzker School of Medicine of the University of Chicago, where he was the director of the Adult and Pediatric Vitreoretinal Surgery Services.
Besides caring for the patients at Chicagoland Retinal Consultants, Dr. Abdelsalam enjoys traveling with his family. “The times that I cherish most are the opportunities to be with my wife and family. Seeing them is a daily reminder to me of the importance of vision and the need for its preservation.”
Dr. Abdelsalam is fluent in Arabic and medical Spanish.
